Le bois sans limite
In the exhibit « Le bois sans limite », the artist Jacques Mongeau sculps wood in various facets and develops the representations of plants, birds and object which perfectly sums up the characteristics of his artistic approach.
With a background in technical drawing, Jacques Mongeau juggles with three-dimension perspectives; he draws his models and everything becomes a source of observation. His imagination has evolved the representations of plants, birds and objects where the form is sometimes harmonized with a touch of colour, always thought of and complementary. He adds to his sculpture engraving, pyrography, low and high reliefs and a mixture of essences. The visitor will see in the sculptures his need to perfect each element.
A native of Sherbrooke, Jacques Mongeau worked for 43 years for a consulting engineering firm in mechanics and electricity for buildings. Wood has always attracted him for its texture, smell, and appearance. It was not until 1995 that he mastered this way of working with wood. From one piece to another, the challenges he gives himself have allowed him to reach a visual artistic level that constantly stimulates him. The variety of his work ensures that monotony and repetition do not settle in this hobby which occupies a large part of his retirement. He won three prizes at the Quebec bird sculpture competition in 2002 and 2004. Since 2005, he has been teaching wood carving.
